Osteocondrosis equina: una enfermedad controvertida con etiología multifactorial

Resumen

La osteocondrosis (OC) es un desorden osteoarticular que afecta principalmente a humanos, cerdos, caballos y perros. Es una de las enfermedades articulares más comunes de los caballos en crecimiento, perteneciendo al complejo de enfermedades ortopédicas del desarrollo. Se caracteriza por una alteración de la osificación endocondral que afecta al cartílago de crecimiento y al hueso subcondral, y es considerada la fase primaria del daño al complejo articular-epifiseal. Su etiología se reporta como multifactorial y los factores etiológicos descritos con mayor frecuencia son la herencia, los desequilibrios dietéticos y endocrinos, el rápido crecimiento, el trauma y los defectos vasculares del cartílago de crecimiento, pero en la actualidad permanece incompletamente entendida y existe gran controversia sobre la participación e interacción de estos factores en la aparición de la enfermedad. La osteocondrosis es una enfermedad que causa grandes pérdidas económicas en la industria equina, representando un problema importante para el sector, de ahí el gran interés en determinar su origen.
