Abstract

It aimed to investigate the factors associated with the abandonment of tuberculosis treatment among tobacco and illicit drug users. This is an exploratory and quantitative study, including the reported cases of tuberculosis treatment abandonment in Mato Grosso, Brazil from 2015 to 2019. There were 373 cases of abandonment, with a prevalence of smokers. Most were male, non-white, aged between 20 and 59 years and not government beneficiaries. There was a statistically significant association with the sociodemographic and clinical variables investigated (p<0.05), with the exception of the directly observed treatment. The findings indicate that this profile of people finds it difficult to adhere to tuberculosis treatment, as well as to seek other care, such as dependence itself. The association of the investigated variables reinforces the need for professionals, especially nurses, to consider and include such aspects in the definition of care plans.
