Abstract

Objective: To identify the conflicts experienced by nursing professionals in hospital inpatient units, considering their sociodemographic characteristics. Methodology: This is an exploratory and quantitative study conducted in a high-complexity philanthropic hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. The research was carried out in four surgical inpatient units, with a final sample of 191 nursing professionals, including nurses, technicians, and nursing assistants. Data collection was performed using a structured questionnaire addressing sociodemographic aspects and the perception of conflict occurrence. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 20.0 softwares, applying descriptive and inferential tests to verify associations between variables. Results: The majority of nursing professionals (75.4%) reported experiencing conflicts in their daily work routine, with the most frequent conflicts occurring between nursing assistants/technicians and nurses (56.0%). Conflicts between nurses and coordinators were less frequently reported (9.9%) but showed a significant association in some units. Conclusions: Conflicts in the hospital environment are inevitable, especially within the nursing team. The adoption of structured mediation strategies can contribute to a more harmonious work environment and improve the quality of patient care. Future studies should further explore the impact of these tensions on the team and patient safety, as well as investigate specific interventions for conflict management in the hospital setting.
