Modulating effect of sedentary lifestyle on the psychological variables of anxiety and resilience

Abstract

Numerous studies have reported on the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle and its relationship to health and quality of life. The main objective of the study was to assess the relationships between sedentary behaviour, anxiety, and resilience. This research was comparative, descriptive, and exploratory in nature. A sample of 3,520 university students enrolled in physiotherapy, nursing, and physical activity and sports science programmes was used. The following questionnaires were used: sedentary behaviour in university students and generalised anxiety. The brief resilience scale was also selected. The fit indices obtained were: X² = 5.20; df = 2; IFI = 0.95, CFI = 0.93; NFI = 0.88; RMSEA = 0.079. Statistically significant differences  (p < 0.01) were observed in the variables of sedentary lifestyle with respect to anxiety (p = 0.34) and resilience. (p = -0.27) A moderate positive relationship was found between sedentary lifestyle and anxiety (β = 0.20, p = 0.018). Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in the variables of sedentary lifestyle with respect to anxiety (p < 0.05) and resilience (p < 0.05). A moderate positive relationship was found between sedentary lifestyle and anxiety (β = 0.24, p = 0.018). A negative relationship was also found between physical inactivity and resilience (β = -0.17, p = 0.032). Finally, a negative relationship was found between anxiety and resilience modulated by physical inactivity (β = -0.12, p = 0.025). In all cases (p < 0.05). The most important conclusion to highlight is the modulating effect of a sedentary lifestyle and resilience on anxiety levels. Further studies on this topic are needed to subsequently develop intervention programmes.
