Abstract

Introduction: The aging population has increased chronic diseases, leading to more dependency and a higher demand for informal caregiving. Objective: to explore the experiences of family caregivers of dependent elderly. Methodology: An ethnographic study was conducted, collecting data from 28 informal caregivers of dependent elderly people through semi-structured interviews and participant observation. Results: Three main themes emerged from the data analysis: normalizing the burden of caregiving, rowing together in the same direction, and feeling limited institutional support. Discussion: The findings highlight the normalization of the emotional and physical burden experienced by caregivers, who take on these responsibilities naturally. Additionally, family support and collaboration among members are seen as essential for managing caregiving demands. However, the lack of resources and institutional support remains a significant limitation, underscoring the urgent need to implement public policies that promote a family-centered approach as a unit of care, not just focusing only on the dependent. Conclusion: It is essential to strengthen institutional support and recognize the role of the family to improve the quality of care.
