Stress and migratory motivation in young addicts admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital of Havana. Cuba

Abstract

The objective of this work is: to understand the migratory motivations in young addicts admitted to the addiction service of the Psychiatric Hospital of Havana, period from September 2023 to November 2023. Method: the research approach was qualitative, under the phenomenological paradigm, and exploratory in scope. To collect information, individual open interviews were applied to 40 male subjects, supported by the observation method. The analysis categories were derived and defined from the information collected through the application of the aforementioned methods. Results: The migratory interest in the cases studied reveals the significant influence of economic precariousness as a primary motivating factor, as well as family reunification and a change of “environment” to avoid relapse into addictions. The planning of the departure, the search for possible destination routes and the journey are among the conditions that most generate migratory stress. Conclusions: the stress associated with the planning and preparation of the migratory process acts as a potentially destabilizing trigger, which hinders the rehabilitation process of the addicted subjects investigated, due to uncertainty, linguistic and cultural barriers
