Attitudes and knowledge about transsexuality among healthcare personnel in a tertiary hospital.

Objectives: The general objective was to analyze the knowledge and attitudes of Mental Health care personnel at a Psychiatry and Mental Health Institute (IPSM) of a third-level hospital regarding transsexuality. The specific objectives included examining attitudes and knowledge among participating men and women, as well as evaluating them among different ages. Methodology: A quantitative study, specifically a cross-sectional descriptive study, was carried out from May 2022 to July 2023.Results: A sample of 55 participants was obtained, of which 74.5% (n=41) were women and 25.5% were men (n=14). After analysing the results, total scores on the TABS scale are quite favorable towards transgender people, with more than 96.4% of the results having with total scores above 116 points. The Kruskal-Walli’s test was used, obtaining statistically significant differences between religion and beliefs about sexual and gender identity, and the Mann-Whitney U test found statistically significant differences between having LGTBIQ+ contacts and interpersonal comfort and total score. Conclusions: The attitudes and knowledge of the workers of the Institute of Psychiatry and Mental Health (IPSM) of a third-level hospital regarding transsexuality were examined. With this, quite favorable scores were observed, although they could be improved, towards transgender people on the part of the healthcare staff.
