Abstract

Puerperal endometritis is a uterine infection that affects the endometrium and is associated with vaginal births and especially cesarean sections. It can progress to puerperal sepsis, affecting structures such as the myometrium and parametrium, and is the third cause of maternal death, according to the PAHO (2020)1 and the WHO (2020)2. These infections are more common in cesarean sections, reaching up to 27%, and result in prolonged hospitalizations with high costs. The case presented describes a 19-year-old patient who, five days after a cesarean section, presented with fever, epigastric pain, and swelling in the surgical area. She was diagnosed with puerperal endometritis and a gynecological infection. Treatment included the nursing care process: assessment, identification of altered domains, interrelated care planning, implementation of interventions, and evaluation of outcomes, resulting in satisfactory health outcomes. Knowledge of preventable complications and the implementation of an evidence-based nursing care process are crucial for reducing risks during the postpartum period and ensuring comprehensive care. This case underscores the importance of specialized care to effectively prevent and treat puerperal infections in institutions such as the HCUAMP.
