Abstract

This essay reflects on the importance of nursing research, highlighting the need to integrate care, teaching, management and research activities for the development of the discipline. Despite the fact that research is recognized as essential, many nursing professionals, especially those in care, have not incorporated it into their practice. The article aims to raise awareness among professionals about the value of research, both in clinical and academic practice, and its impact on the development of the discipline. Academic nursing not only transmits technical knowledge, but also fosters critical, ethical, and leadership competencies. However, perceptions of nurses' role as teachers and researchers vary among students, colleagues, and administrators. Nursing research, conceptualized as a scientific process that validates and generates knowledge, faces challenges due to the lack of adequate training and motivation. Barriers include deficiencies in methodological knowledge and resource limitations in health and educational institutions. It is concluded that this context creates a vicious cycle where the lack of research demotivates professionals to train, perpetuating the perception of research as something secondary to their professional role.
